Syria: Reducing Poverty through Handcrafts

The project supports the revitalisation of traditional handcrafts and in this way contributes to improved living conditions.

The artist Suhail Thubian, who lives in the rural area of the city of as-Suwaida, produces carpets and fabric prints using traditional techniques and is involved in social projects. Thanks to support from Volkshilfe, he can now pass on his knowledge to talented young people and train them in traditional crafts. In this way, traditional handicrafts are kept alive and additional income is generated for the project participants.

As part of the project, 20 young men and women regularly attend courses with the artist Suhail Thubian, where they learn how to weave carpets and the technique of hand printing using carved wooden stamps on fabric.

In addition, the project provides basic equipment and tools for small studios where the participants can continue to work independently after the project ends.

By networking and selling the products at regional markets and abroad, the project is making a sustainable contribution to improving the living conditions of these young people.
